A major example of the work of the great Ely Jacques Kahn, 261 Fifth Avenue makes extensive use of multi-colored terra cotta on a highly abstract Art Deco façade. An unexpected burst of color among its staid neighbors, the building’s setbacks and luminous lobby make it a classic of the Pre-Crash Gatsby age. Kahn was a pioneer of new American trends in architecture and often incorporated asymmetrical massing and abstract detailing that echoed designs by his renowned contemporary, architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Vidaris replaced much of 261 Fifth’s unique terra cotta, sections of which had deteriorated to the point of being able to be removed by hand.
