The project is an interior renovation of approximately 44,000 square feet on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors of the A Building on the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) campus. The renovation reconfigures the kitchen, cafeteria, bookstore, and temporary classrooms in the A building into 15 textile, cosmetics, and product design laboratories and academic spaces that are currently operating in the B and C building. Vidaris assisted the design team in navigating the intricacies of lighting power density compliance within the varying laboratory occupancies and student exhibit areas. The project included redesigned shower/changing rooms and bike storage for commuters, high efficiency HVAC upgrades with right sized system design, and 82% of new equipment specified as Energy Star-rated. The building’s indoor environment was enhanced through providing enhanced fresh ventilation air (30% better than ASHRAE 62.1 code), specification of low-emitting materials, isolation of the laboratory and chemical use areas from classroom and support areas, and flush-out of the renovated areas prior to occupancy.
