The University Center is the first new building The New School has had and will accommodate for their
growing student body. Surrounded by residential buildings, in the Greenwich neighborhood on Fifth
Avenue and 13th Street, The New School’s University Center design will be unique to the area. The varied
program includes an auditorium, the main university library, lecture halls, classrooms, laboratories,
distant learning center, informal study spaces, a cafeteria, retail cafes, and a 600-bed dormitory with a
fitness center. Horizontal and diagonal bands of glass on the sides of the building will allow pedestrians
to see students and faculty members circulate along corridors and stairwells. The building facade
materials are primarily sloped, patinized, brass and glass. Three storefront entrances at the base of
the building all have exterior brass canopies.
